What is Pawnbroking?
Pawnbroking is a secure way to borrow money by using your valuables, such as gold, jewellery, or watches, as collateral. Unlike traditional bank loans, pawnbroking doesn’t require credit checks or lengthy applications. At Ramsdens, we offer instant valuations and competitive loans, giving you quick access to cash while keeping the process simple and transparent. Once you repay the loan, your item is returned to you in the same condition.
The History of Pawnbroking
Pawnbroking has its roots in ancient China and Greece, dating back over 3,000 years. In the UK, it became formalised in the 19th century, offering working-class families a lifeline during financial hardship. Today, pawnbroking is a regulated and respected financial service. We uphold this tradition with modern fairness, combining expert valuations, flexible terms, and a commitment to ethical lending.

Collateral: The item you pledge (e.g., jewellery) to secure the loan.
Redemption Period: The agreed time is six months to repay the loan and collect your goods.

We believe in fairness and transparency, so you’ll never encounter confusing jargon or unexpected charges.
Pawnbrokers and Their Role
Who Are Pawnbrokers, and What Do They Do?
Pawnbrokers are licensed professionals who offer short-term secured loans against valuable items. Unlike banks or Pay Day lenders, Ramsdens provide a transparent, asset-based borrowing solution without credit checks or lengthy paperwork. Our team consists of expert valuers who assess your items fairly, explain loan terms clearly, and ensure your valuables are stored securely until repayment. Our goal is to provide a flexible alternative to traditional lending, whether you need quick cash or a hassle-free way to borrow.
What Types of Items Do We Accept?
We accept a wide range of items, including:
Jewellery and watches (e.g., gold, diamonds, prestigious brands like Rolex or Cartier)
Precious metals (gold bars, silver coins)
Antiques and collectables (e.g., rare coins)
At Ramsdens, we specialise in gold, jewellery, and watches, offering some of the most competitive loan rates in the UK.
How Do Ramsdens Determine an Item’s Value?
Our valuers consider four key factors:
Market demand: Current prices for gold, gems, or branded goods.
Condition: Age, wear, and functionality (e.g., working watches).
Authenticity: We verify hallmarks, serial numbers, and certifications.
Resale potential: Items with strong secondary markets (e.g., Rolex) can secure higher loans.
Every valuation at Ramsdens is free and no obligation, with no pressure to accept the offer.

What Is the Typical Loan Duration?
A Ramsdens pawnbroking loan is for six months.
Need longer? See the offered solutions below. Partial payments may be made for any amount at any time during the loan period, which may help to reduce the amount of interest paid.
Can a Ramsdens pawnbroking loan be renewed after six months?
Yes. At Ramsdens, we understand circumstances change, and we allow a contract to be renewed for a further six months by paying all the interest due plus an amount of the loan capital (typically 20%). The new loan will then be lower, thus reducing the amount of interest. It is encouraged for partial payments to be made during the loan period, which also may make the loan cheaper for you.

Hold a licence with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
Offer Clear Terms – No hidden fees; interest rates and loan durations are explained upfront.
Provide Secure Storage – Insured premises for pledged items.
Have Transparent Reviews – Look for high-street presence and customer testimonials.
Red Flags to Avoid:
Pressure to accept unfair terms.
Vague pricing or refusal to show credentials.
Documents and ID Required
UK law requires pawnbrokers to verify customer identity. At Ramsdens, you’ll need:
- One Primary ID (original, not photocopy):
Passport
UK Driving Licence
EU National ID Card

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Pawnbroking at Ramsdens
At Ramsdens, we want you to feel completely confident when using our services. Here are answers to our most commonly asked questions, along with some extra tips you might find helpful.
Pawnbroking Loans & Credit
Can I get a pawn loan with bad credit or no credit history?
Absolutely!
Pawnbroking loans are secured against your item, so your credit score isn't checked.
Whether you have poor credit, no credit history, or even bankruptcy, you can still take out a pawnbroking loan.
Your loan amount depends only on your item's value, not your financial background.
Why it matters: Unlike banks or payday lenders, we won’t reject you based on past financial difficulties.
Do pawnbroking loans affect my credit score?
No—never.
Ramsdens does not report to credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, etc.).
Defaulting on a pawnbroking loan won’t harm your credit file (though you may lose your item if unpaid).
Key difference: Traditional loans appear on your credit report—pawn loans don’t.
Lost contracts and item recovery
What if I lose my pawnbroking contract?
Don’t worry—we can help.
Visit the Ramsdens store where you took out the loan, and they will complete an affidavit where you sign this as a statutory declaration. You will need to take a photo ID with you and be able to describe the items that were pledged. In most cases, we will be able to authorise the declaration in-house, but there are some occasions where you may need to take the affidavit to a commissioner for oaths (most solicitors can do this), where they will check your identity and sign and stamp the form. You will then bring this form back to us, and we will then be able to complete the transaction. There is a nominal charge of £5 for us issuing the form, but if you need to go to a solicitor, they will also make a charge to you.
Remember, the pawnbroking contract is a legally binding document and should be looked after. If you have realised you have lost it or had it stolen, please contact the store immediately, and we will make notes on your account. The bearer of a pawnbroking contract, can access a redemption of the items.
Can I repay my pawnbroking loan early?
Yes
Early repayment reduces the amount of interest you need to pay
A full repayment table is issued with every pawnbroking contract so you can see how much it will cost to redeem on any day of the loan term
- Bring your pawnbroking contract and payment to the issuing Ramsdens store and you may collect your goods at any time. You may also redeem online and collect soon after from the store. By doing online, you may pay at any time of day or night!
What items do you NOT accept?
